What are the hiring requirements?
While most trucking companies will have their own set of requirements each driver must meet, truck drivers in the U.S. must comply with requirements set by the Department of Transportation (DOT). These include (but are not limited to) a driver must receive a Class A CDL, be able to speak English, be a U.S. citizen, be at least 21 years old, and have a valid driver's license from the state in which you currently live. In addition, drivers are required to pass the DOT physical exam before employment to ensure there are no health issues or conditions that may interfere with the safe driving of a commercial truck.
How do I get a CDL?
To obtain a CDL you must first receive adequate training from a truck driving school or company. Then you must pass the DOT exam and apply for your license at the Department of Motor Vehicles. The CDL test is comprised of two different parts: a general knowledge writing portion and a driving test where you will demonstrate that you can safely operate a commercial truck.
